Award-Winning Engineering Program Creates Future Engineering Leaders

Alpine Union School District continues to grow its engineering program.

Alpine Union School District continues to expand its award-winning engineering, robotics and coding programs at Joan MacQueen Middle School while providing more students the opportunity to participate in the program!

Currently, JMMS has an engineering and robotics program that does more than just talk about robots. This class leads students through the engineering design process as they design, build, test, modify and program robots to achieve specific tasks! Students apply math and science concepts, practice critical thinking and engage in research as they work to solve problems based on real-world situations.

The 2019 Jr Solar Sprint Held at the Technology Student Association convention in Washington, DC served as a recent win for JMMS students. They took second place in the national competition!

Joan MacQueen is actively pursuing funding and grants to support teacher training, curriculum development, and the purchase of needed technology.

Engineering and Robotics teacher, Diana Tompkins, works with JMMS principal, Casey Currigan, as founding members of the newly formed “National STEM/Robotics Educators Consortium.” This group includes members from SPAWAR, Mississippi Robotics and educators from across the nation. Members meet monthly to brainstorm how to best integrate STEM/STEAM and robotics learning in the math and science curriculum.
