Based in Venice Beach, California, Spout was founded in 2019 by Tyler Breton and Reuben Vollmer. Spout has implemented and refined the ingenious technology of Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) to produce enough water for the recommended daily intake of up to 4 people in the smallest possible footprint.

The Spout fits on almost any countertop in a home, RV, or camper van, allowing humans to go beyond the limitations of piped water or water delivered in plastic bottles. Wherever electricity can go, water can flow. No more delivery trucks, plastic-tasting water, or uncertain municipal pollutants, just pure water made right where you need it.

Spout understands that a device that lives on the counter needs to be simultaneously user-friendly and aesthetically cohesive with its surroundings. The team worked with Fred Bould, of Bould Design (the firm that designed the Nest Thermostat) to successfully pioneer a unique design that will not just earn its place on a kitchen countertop, but will set the bar for a brand-new, sustainable way to enjoy fresh, drinking water in the home- wherever home is.

• Makes 1.5-2.5 gallons a day on average, depending on conditions

How Spout Was Born

In 2014, Reuben Vollmer, Spout’s CEO, was forced to come to grips with the reality that water is, indeed, finite when his family faced losing their farm’s water rights from the State of California.

Four years prior, they had planted 14 acres of young olive trees with the hope of producing olive oil for the nearby city of Los Angeles. However, before their first harvest, they received a threatening letter from the State of California asserting that due to the drought conditions, the water from their well may soon be restricted or taxed, risking their well-being and the life of their orchard.

Shortly after receiving that letter, Reuben was walking his dog in the morning and noticed the abundant dew on a grassy field. A lightbulb went off, and he thought that there must be a way to harness this natural process. He immediately began making countless prototypes to find ways to do this as reliably, inexpensively, and as safely as possible.

Reuben founded a company, DewGood, which was struggling to find commercial success due to the high cost of producing each machine, which was still quite large at the time. A meeting in 2018 with Tyler Breton proved to be serendipitous when Tyler was immediately captivated by the technology and asked to borrow a machine. He saw the massive potential and knew that it needed some adjustments to become a viable consumer product: making it smaller, quieter, and less expensive.

Together, Reuben and Tyler were able to evolve the DewGood device into what is now Spout. With secured funding from venture capital firms, including Mars Bio, Burnt Island Ventures, and Aqualateral, they were able to partner with Fred Bould to create an elegant machine that can be the centerpiece of freshness in every modern home.

In 2022, Spout’s first small production batch quickly sold out in the first 2 months, proving that the consumer is ready for a big water change.
