Code A Wish Corp Hosts AI 101 Summer Virtual Series for Teens amid Pandemic

Rockville, Maryland – August 3rd, 2020 – Code A Wish Corp is a Maryland 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is run by teens, for teens. The club was started in the summer of 2019 by six high schoolers from Montgomery, Howard, and Fairfax Counties in the greater Washington, D.C. area. The founder of the non-profit, Faith Cheung, a senior at Richard Montgomery High School, first started a school chapter of “Girls who Code” after discovering that technology education is insufficient at most schools. After teaching coding at local libraries and even foster homes in Taiwan, she decided to coalesce and formalize her efforts into “Code A Wish” with a team of six like-minded high school students. They shared the same vision that public schools nationwide have an educational gap on teaching the latest technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), especially to under-privileged students.

After months of extensive planning and coordination, they launched their first tech conference, the “Future Summit,” on November 16th, 2019 at the Hilton in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It proved to be a huge success with more than 200 teens from the East Coast in attendance as prominent entrepreneurs and computer scientists gave speeches on cutting-edge topics like machine learning, voice technology AI, and the fourth industrial revolution.

To extend outreach to even more teens amid the current pandemic, the group has kicked off a new virtual summer series called “AI 101.” The learning gap in the tech field was evident to the Code A Wish team as participants failed to answer basic questions regarding AI in the AI Virtual interactive webinars. The organization aims to bridge the gap in the public school curriculum and provide much-needed education to teens so that they can be better equipped with foundational knowledge in AI and other emerging technologies.

On July 3rd, 2020, Code A Wish hosted their first summer 2020 AI 101 webinar in which hundreds of students enthusiastically participated. The virtual series have also been published on Youtube for those who could not join the live session.

Since then, Code A Wish continues to host weekly live sessions, and an increasing number of students have signed up to join these interactive webinars. The topics, which have generated interest from nearly 500 eager elementary and middle school students, have also been carefully curated to reflect current events and problems in the world. For example, the second episode was dedicated to the use of AI in COVID-19 research. The team strives to reach even more students this summer and to provide an easy to follow virtual platform to inspire a new generation of teens to employ emerging technologies to solve the problems of the 21st century. The next virtual webinar will be hosted on Friday, August 7th, 2020 at 5 pm Eastern Standard Time.
